As we are wrapping up our project many things have stuck out to me. I have learned that what we are doing is making a huge impact on these children's lives. I have also learned that I am very privileged that I always know where my next meal will be from. One thing that Donna told us while we were working on a project really stuck out to me. That some of these children are always looking for a way to get food, to find out where their next meal will be from. It shows me that now that the semester is coming to a close that I shouldn't leave this behind. That I should follow through because this problem won't go away on its own.

As our project is about to come to an end I have begun to reflect on the past few months. I have learned how privileged I am to never have to worry about where my next meal is going to come from. I have also have gained a new perspective on what it truly means to be the hands and feet of God. I am amazed by people who give their time, money, and efforts every week to make sure that these kids have a meal over the weekend.
Today during our hour of work my group and I were reminded of why we are doing our project. Donna (she gives us jobs to do), told us a story about how much people in our community struggle to find enough food. She said that she was speaking to the father of a young boy who stated, "I'm always looking for a way to get food." This is something that is nearly unimaginable to us, because we've never missed a meal unless we weren't hungry. With this in mind, and our project drawing to a close, it reminds me of how privileged we are and how much we take for granted. While there isn't anything wrong with being privileged, there is something wrong when we don't share what we have with others. In this case we share what little we have of our time, even though it isn't much.
We have gone to help prepare the backpacks and food for the backpack program at a local church a few times over the past months. I think that we need to spread the word more with what we are doing. I also think that we can be a little bit more active in our project and try and find other places to volunteer. It's getting closer to the time in which our volunteering at the Backpacks for Kids program will begin to pay off. In a few weeks, bags will be packed with food and then delivered to the children. We have really enjoyed working to help people who are in need, and it really provides a different perspective on our living conditions. Knowing that our actions are impacting other people in a positive way is a really rewarding experience.
I realize that by doing this project we aren't changing the entire world. We aren't capable of doing that. But by helping those around us, we are changing our portion of the world. This Friday we had the opportunity to work with the church in organizing their food closet. In this closet we were putting food and snacks on the correct shelves. It really struck me this week that these kids who receive the backpacks rely on them to feed them through the weekend. They rely on all the food that is packaged with love. Inside the backpacks their is a note from the church that tells the kids that they are special and they were thought of during the process of packing the backpacks. These kids rely on these backpacks and the volunteers .......
For the past two weeks our group went to a local church to help with a backpack program. Although I wasn't able to make it the week it still made an impact. When we were there we helped sort and organize food that would be distributed to the kids, we also threw out expired food that we couldn't feed to the children. We are scheduled to deliver the backpacks to the school later on in December but we are still planning on helping with more of the "behind the scenes" things. Before going into this project I didn't realize how much thought and preparation has to go on to make this possible. Thanks for reading!
The past two weeks, we have volunteered our time at the Lake City CRC, helping them prepare for their upcoming Backpacks for Kids program. It's been good to see what happens "behind the scenes" of what actually goes into providing food for people around our community. While it's easy to talk about the issue of hunger, actually giving your time and work to help others, sort of makes everything feel more real and not nearly as distant.
The past two Fridays we have gone to a local church and helped them get food ready for the BackPacks for Kids program. We sorted food and threw out old expired food. We are planning on helping fill the backpacks soon. We are also planning on going to the school to help deliver the backpacks to kids. We also made a youtube video about our subject and have posted information about our topic on Facebook. Thank you for all of your support.
My name is Madelyn, and I am very excited about this 20 Times project. I am a sophomore this year and I enjoy playing many sports at my school, going to youth group and showing animals at the Youth show.
I wanted to do a topic that would benefit the people in my community. I'm hoping to volunteer at a lot of local organizations that help people who need it. It is so important as a Christian to do something that is helpful others. Many of the role models in my life are constantly volunteering their time and money to different organizations or projects. I was inspired by these people to do something local in our community that would bring help. I am hoping that while I do this 20 Times project I will inspire others to make a change in their community, and that I will grow closer in my walk with God. |
